As a wills and estates lawyer, I aim to provide clients with practical and sound legal advice, with a compassionate and human touch. I am a TEP designated lawyer – an internationally recognized designation that formally identifies trusts and estates practitioners who demonstrate expertise in the field. I don’t dabble in this area – it is all that I do.
My goal is to give clients peace of mind. With over 15 years of experience as a lawyer, I understand that each client has a unique family and financial situation. I work with clients to consider the nuances of their situation and help them make informed decisions so that they can feel confident about their estate planning or administration.
When estate planning, I believe that preparing a Will is about more than setting out a distribution of assets. It is also an opportunity to communicate values, to care for the loved ones who survive you, and to intentionally support causes that you believe in. A Will can be a powerful testament to how you lived your life.
Therefore, I take the time to understand your wishes and values, as well as your family and financial situation, so that your estate plan reflects your objectives while also balancing legal and tax-related matters. I collect this important information using a structured and efficient approach, guiding you through what can sometime feel like an uncomfortable process. I understand that you may not always know what to ask or what options are available to you, so I will explain the law and present appropriate options for informed decision-making.
My background as a commercial lawyer is particularly beneficial when strategic thinking and an ability to bring a practical approach to complex situations is required. I frequently work with regulated professionals, small business owners and family businesses to develop tailored succession plans that satisfy the corporate, regulatory or other obligations imposed upon them.
Equally, when working through the administration of an estate I aim to compassionately guide and assist clients through what can feel like an overwhelming process by breaking down the matter into discrete manageable tasks. All legal advice and support is provided with an authentic human touch, mindful of the emotional challenges that clients are often concurrently working through.
Prior to joining Linmac LLP, I worked as a sole practitioner in wills and estates for several years. Before that, I practised at a leading international firm in their civil litigation department and as a corporate lawyer at a boutique corporate law firm in Toronto. When not working on client files, I regularly attend conferences with colleagues and other professionals to keep abreast of the latest matters relating to estate planning and administration. I also busy myself reading memoirs, running along the Beaches’ waterfront trails, peddling nowhere on my stationary bike, cooking and tending to my garden. I enjoy these most when joined by my husband, son and twin daughters (provided none are whining!)
